Welcome to the very first edition of PROFILE.

In this new blog feature, I will be running short profiles (5 questions) on entrepreneurs, innovators, small business owners, hard workers + down right legends, whether this be a business, brand or person.  Social Media has allowed me to connect with so many brilliant people with inspirational stories and I would like to share these with you!

PROFILE: RAW STATE by EMILY BELLE

1. Tell us a bit about Raw State …
Raw State by Emily Belle is a luxurious & affordable range that consists of stunning natural hand-poured scented soy wax candles, bath, body & home fragrance. I started Raw State in March of 2012 when I discovered a lack of quality yet affordable natural soy candles. It simply started as a hobby for myself in my small home kitchen. I gave some of these candles to my mum, who loved them. Her friends saw them and wanted some, so I made a few for them. Then their friends saw them & also wanted some. It was at that point if my answer had have been ‘no’ candle making would have stayed a hobby, but if I said ‘yes’ it would become a business. That decision took me a matter of seconds…

2. What inspires/motivated you?
This will sound really cliche but I am seriously inspired by my parents. SInce starting my brand I have continued to work full time with my parents & their national company. They have been married 30 years and in business for 20. What I can & do learn from them on a daily basis is something I treasure. I keep motivated by the goal of building my brand to become one of the ‘big brands’ while keeping the locally made title. I set lots of smaller goals for myself & the brand to help achieve the big picture. That keeps me motivated to keep crossing off the little ones and putting myself closer to achieving the big ones!

3. Describe your style in 3 words.
Both my personal & brand style would be described as timeless, minimalist & coastal.

4. What is your favourite quote?
“life is 10% what happens to you, but 90% how you deal with it”…

5. What would be your best piece of advice for other budding entrepreneurs?
Gosh, there is so much advice I could call the best… but my personal best advice would have to be plan! Start with a business plan, include a strategic plan & re-visit it! Once you have your product & brand decided. Write a business plan, include a strategic plan with goals for 1 month, 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, 5 & 10 years… I didn’t think a business plan was very important & so I decided to write mine fairly loosely but as I started to write I realised that getting the thoughts out of my head, into a plan & onto paper helped me to gain a stronger brand direction. Its by no means an official document, printed & bound, its simply in an old exercise book but I refer to this document so frequently & it becomes such an achievement when I can cross my goals off!
