Soul Travel – Jan Juc/Torquay

01 Jun Soul Travel – Jan Juc/Torquay

As some of you may know, we have a family beach house on the Mornington Peninsula and so our routine weekend getaway is to head down there (which is perfect!). But as they say, a change is as good as a holiday (so many puns in one sentence) so this year we’ve decided to do a number of short breaks/weekends away and explore other parts of Victoria + Australia whilst Luka is still little (he’s 17 months for those interested and planning to travel with toddlers). When heading away for the weekend, I’m always interested in hearing about the best places to stay (in our case stylish, functional + family friendly), fab places to eat, shop, visit and my number one priority … where is the best coffee in town?! So, I’m introducing Soul Travel to the blog to bring you a summary of all the above as we embark on a series of adventues. I hope you guys enjoy and would love to hear your thoughts + ideas of where to visit next. Big shoutout to Erin from Harley Quinn + Co (@harleyquinnandco) for creating the lettering for the series and to everyone we met along the way x

Home away from home … where to stay??

Airbnb is the schizzle right? There is only one problem. There are SO many options and I have decision fatigue at the very best of times. So let me make it super simple… Jan Juc Beach House (@janjucbeachhouse). We were referred to Hayley from Jan Juc Beach House via a mutual friend and honestly, it was the most perfect place to stay for our weekend away. The house was not only styled beautifully, well located and decked out in divine local produce, it was super kid friendly (we’re talking cot, high chair, books + toys and child-proof locks) #winning. We were also super impressed with the commitment to sustainable and eco brands (which we share) and gorgeous luxuries to treat ourselves. We couldn’t recommend it highly enough. Hayley has been super kind and is offering our followers a 10% discount of your next stay at Jan Juc Beach House, just give them a shout via the “Contact Host” feature and mention Sneakers + Soul.

Did someone say coffee?!

So, anyone who has ever even glanced over at my Instagram feed or blog, will know that I have a coffee obsession.  Not only do I need it, but I am a major self-confessed coffee snob. And being from Melbourne, the standard is high.  I was VERY pleasantly surprised by the number of boutique/speciality cafes all serving up a delicious caffeine fix. My pick of the bunch would definitely be local coffee roasters, Ocean Grind. We visited their super rad coffee caravan, Felix, at Torquay Farmer’s Market and also picked up some beans for home. They are definitely as passionate about coffee as we are and batting above the average. Other places for a great cuppa include Swell Cafe, Ginger Monkey and Bottle of Milk (Torquay).

Do you start thinking about dinner before you’ve had lunch? Place to eat.

We ate so many delicious meals over the weekend and were stoked by the abundance of organic + whole food options and stores. Some great places we visited are listed below. Our absolute fave was Senors, for dinner + a few drinks (with our babe Jenna from Love Ludie) on the Friday night. So, this place basically ticks all the boxes … beach views, ah-mazing menu (I had the Charcoal Bun Burger with Kimchi, Salted Cucumber, Sriracha, Apple Slaw which was THE best burger I’ve even eaten …. oh, and Mac + Cheese was perfect for the little), stunning fit out and the most Instagramable (that is now a word) mules ever, served in copper mugs. So basically win-win-win-win. Must visit.

Other places to visit …

Swell Cafe, Shop 1, 18-20 Princess Terrace, Jan Juc.

Ginger Monkey, 4 Baines Crescent, Torquay

The Kindness Cafe, 5 Zeally Bay Rd, Torquay

Mexican Cantina (food truck next door to The Kindness Cafe)

Bottle of Milk, 23 Bell Street, Torquay

Fisho’s, 36 The Esplanade, Torquay

Local Talent

Over the weekend, I was on a mission to scout and connect with local talent so here is a very brief introduction to 3 killer local ladies doing some rad things; Love Ludie, Hello Zef and U+ I (inside their rad studio below) – check out their brands online and stay tuned for some upcoming collabs and profiles to follow x

Let’s go exploring …

In fairness, a weekend away is not a lot of time (especially when you need to factor in sleep times for little etc, etc) so tried not to cram in too many activities otherwise we just get home exhausted. We like to potter about and take it the surroundings … local markets are always a hit, as are beach walks!

Torquay Farmer’s Market (every Saturday)

Birdrock Lookout

Until next time … travel safe x
