29 Jun Ballarat Winterlude x
It’s that time of year when the days get colder and shorter and the next public holiday is nowhere in sight. So we thought, let’s embrace the season and take a short trip to Ballarat Winterlude before braving the snow with mini for the first time later in the year. We haven’t been up to Ballarat for a few years now so it was nice to get away, visit some new spots (with a little now in tow) and check out the latest on the coffee + dining scene (which was amazing!!). Big tick for Ballarat coffee from the big coffee snob over here. Once the weather does eventually warm up, we can’t wait to head back and do some more exploring. Here’s the low down on what we got up to …
When we travel, we like to stay in luxe pads and Ballarat Premier Apartments did not disappoint. This beautifully restored Victorian home caters to every luxury right in the heart of Ballarat. The perfect place to feel like you really got away from the daily grind (even if just for one night!) and super central to everything. Can’t wait to come back!
Our first day was action packed with a stop at Kryal Castle on the way from Melbourne. We all enjoyed checking out the nooks around this medieval wonderland and Luka shows you it’s never to early to try your hand at archery!! (seriously no, we only let him play with the bow but I think he’s got the stance down pat). I had a turn and really loved it, even managed to score me a bullseye on my last arrow… thinking about scouting an archery range in Melbourne and trying my hand at it (pun intended). As someone who has always been obsessed with horses, Robin Hood + the whole medieval period (yes yes, the truth always comes out), the joust was also a must see!
Quick but DELICIOUS lunch at Vegas + Rose (an absolute fave), we were off again!
Next stop was at Ballarat Wildlife Park. This was probably our highlight … Luka is obsessed with animals right now and being able to pat + feed the roaming roo’s was heaven (look at that smile!). Couple that with an alligator feeding demo, koala sightings, running into our beautiful friends from Sunday the Label and roasting giant marshmallows in a fire pit and enough said!
We finished off an adventurous day with a pub meal and cider at the beautifully refurbished Western Hotel. Gastro pub grub at it’s best with a hip, yet family-friendly ambiance.
A drive by Lake Wendouree also made for a killer sunset over the water which I highly recommend 🙂
Sunday began as all Sundays should – with great coffee and brunch by a fire at Eclectic Tastes … a fusion Asian brunch spot serving delicious eats with an eclectic twist.
Armed with takeaway coffees + many, many layers (it was minus 1 in Ballarat on Sunday morning!) we headed to Sovereign Hill. We wandered down Main Street, had some Winter treats (think mulled wine + toffee apple!) and panned for gold. It really is such a magic place and the Winter delights are incredible, with intermittent snowflakes and a killer light show every evening. Such a fun day out and perfect for the whole family.
Lastly, a big shoutout to the guy who insisted of taking a photo of the three of us. It’s gorge and a rare capture of the our little tribe(especially all of us looking at the camera!). For anyone heading to Ballarat soon, check out Visit Ballarat for a bunch of helpful info to point you in the right direction. All in all, an awesome little weekend away over the colder months and Ballarat, we’ll be back soon! x
